We witnessed a swan call
and built a sandcastle
one, two swift kicks
a castle made of sand
the cygnets clustered close to the parents
and the sandcastle was destroyed
before the incoming tide washed it away
at this time of year the grey cygnets couldn’t fly
and we thought this is how a parent might feel
being on the look-out and feed as the tide floods or recedes
